After doing some tests, I'm even more convinced that meta tag keywords DO affect SEO ranking in Google.
You can see for yourself by trying the very same test. Here's how...
Do a Google search query using a string of keywords copied and pasted from the keywords meta tag of any web page already ranked in Google, commas and all.
To keep the test fair and unbiased, be sure to use 'generic' words, not brand-related terms unique to the site.
Chances are, the very web page that you took the keywords from will be the very same page that is ranked number one in your search results (assuming there's no other web page using the same exact string of keywords).
If Google doesn't use meta tags at all for ranking, then this couldn't occur. But this test proves that it does.
Some may object: "Okay, so Google does take meta tags into account. But not much."
In response I'd say: "How much influence they have may be debatable, but every little bit helps."
