Avatars and sigs are bloat. They add nothing special to the forum except for self-promotion. I've never really seen any usefulness in avatars. If a user wants to put links info about his works he can do that in his profile. There's a huge user information field for that.

Signatures you can go on without... But avatars are something different. On almost any forum I visit regularly, I recognize people by their avatars. If I notice an avatar I haven't seen yet, I then look at their username.

Many people are visual thinkers and can associate images with information better than textual representation with information. Having avatars actually increased usability on the user end- thusly, they most definitely would not be considered bloat.

after some more thought on this, i think i agree with burntsushi.

usability is increased significantly with at least a 40x40 avatar or even 60x60 avatar.

it makes it much easier to remember who is actually posting something and probably makes people want to return to a forum.

the forums that are just a sea of text can be overwhelming.

maybe there should be a vote on this? (if there are enough people to vote)

one more feature suggestion... wonder what other people think of this:

for the admin section, a way to blast an email out to all registered members for forum updates, news or occasional upgrade notices etc.

this could be useful for your own seo-board as well, you could blast an email out telling everyone when the next version of seo-board is ready.

then in each persons profile, there could be a checkbox choice for 'allow the admin to send me occasional emails regarding this site'.

perhaps rss would solve the above suggestion as well, but maybe not as directly or personally.

Ok this will be my last feature request. I promise

Ever since you asked, I feel like a kid in a candy store..

Ok here it goes,...

On the home page of my seo-board forum I moved the 'Latest Posts' Section to the top fold of the page. But it does not matter whether it is on the top of the page, or the normal way at the bottom. I have the following suggestion:

To have the option in the admin interface of putting 'beginning teaser text' of the first X number of characters of a persons post right under the post titles (in the latest forum posts section).

An example of this can be seen on the front page of http://www.webmasterworld.com

One of the reasons Blogs have been so successful I think is because of this feature of showing the headline along with enough teaser text to get an idea of what the post is about and if it is worth investigating further. This format makes it highly scannable and usable. According to Jacob Nielsen ( http://www.useit.com ) internet users like to scan and skim text. So the teaser text would promote this concept. Basically it would allow a person to enter the main page... and THEN, just SIT THERE and slowly scan over ALL the titles, examining the title and the teaser text to make a choice about which post headline to click. It would be very time saving and make the forum very usable and efficient.

I do not think that just the headline is enough information to know if a post is worth reading.. often times I find myself guessing if I should click it and check the thread out..(part of the reason for this is that many people write too general headlines) and then, after I have done that I end up clicking the post headline, then reading the first post and some of the other ones only to realize it was a waste of time.

I am not saying SEO-Board is supposed to be a blog, but this kind of added feature would give it the best of both worlds in my opinion.

It would also really help to differentiate your forum software from most of the other ones out there (and maybe even make it better than blogs?)

When is the next release of seo-board due out?
Posted:  09 Jun 2005 08:42
just wanted to add 2 more cents of a suggestion:

an option in seo-board_options to not allow people to make any posts for X number of days,

or an option in seo-board_options to prevent newly registered members from posting clickable urls for X number of days from the time of registration.

These are anti spam measures to prevent people only posting in forums for purposes of promoting affiliate programs etc.

in each users profile email address field it does not allow a person to enter their email in words...

this is not good because many people hesitate to write their actual email on a web page for fear of getting spam spiders picking their email up

better to let people enter their email as

myemail AT gmail dot com

without it saying there is an error

The next release will be postponed. Sorry about that. I just got a large project I'll be working on. Keep the suggestions coming. As for the email, the board cannot interpret myemail AT gmail. I'll probably add some basic form of anti-spam protection using some javascript.

I wonder if a feature to 'subscribe to threads' and forum categories would create too much bloat..

but the occasional emails I get from digital point forums letting me know a new post has been added to a thread or category has always made me come back to the forum..

again, not sure if this is too much of a bloat feature..or how complex it would be to integrate but it sure as hell seems to be a way to get people to come back to the forum..

i wonder how much extra added value such a feature has.. compared to not having it..

Hey there forumers!

My forum is working fine and I checked my database is around 321 KB as of today

http://forum.awaskemalangan.com

Feature suggestion:

1.  Search - highlight text and words being searched

2.  Keep it small and simple.  No need avatars.

*If people want more prettier forums then get some thing else! like phpBB - then get your database large but clunky!

3.  How to switch on/off IP address view?
(Do I need to edit some php thingy somewhere?)

I didn't see anything on this so here goes.. A "Top" link that works in any browser (some I come across don't work in Opera for whatever reason).

Perhaps embedded in the extreme right of each msg header? At very least I'd say one at the bottom would be useful.

The mouse wheelie finger gets mighty tired scrolling up from a long list of messages and I, like many probably, have forgotten the scroll bars and keyboard when working forums in read-only mode.

Lastly, options in the user settings to set defaults for:
[list]
[*]Format BBCodes?
[*]Convert smilies to images?
[*]Convert URLs and emails into links?
[*]Preview Reply
[/list]

On seconds thought, LASTLY support for the bullet list BBSCode.. :-)

..BBCode

I am not seeing the edit command.. Thought it was alive for 20 mins?

A "free caret" message editor would be nice. Might be beyond the capability of PHP though.

It was live 20 mins ago

A better editor could be nice as a future addon.

By the way, in case I didn't complement you on my first post, very nice! Fast, smart looking and with the following SEO-Board seems to be cultivating I can picture SE0-Board becoming a real contender.

how about a form to email people privately.  Like a small link on their profile, click the link and then they go to a form that asks for their email, name, and message.

I've thought about that, but it probably can be abused by an automated script?

Just like posting messages have there be some time interval between messaging
Posted:  20 Aug 2005 09:22
A script can go through a forum and email all members some spam. To prevent this, I'll need to put an image with a number that should be verified. I haven't looked into it yet, but I think I'll probably need a third party image library.
I guess my intent with seo-board is that all contact information need to be placed in the user information field in the member profile. Every user can put my email is blabla at bla bla dot com.

I know it is an advanced feature and you might not like it but I know many users would love a PM system.

Recomender features:

User who posted gets an email when someone replys.

Easy way to manage admins.

Thanks
